Local Church Closes Its Doors For Safety Reasons

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – According to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, a church in the Fishtown section of the city is closing its doors until further notice.

The Saint Laurentius Church has been examined on multiple occasions over the past several months by an engineering firm and an inspection earlier this week led to a recommendation to close the worship site.

The Archdiocese says it has accepted the recommendation and authorized the closure of the church out of concern for the safety of parishioners, students and the community.

An inspection was performed by independent engineers during fall 2013. The process revealed several maintenance issues. The Archdiocese says protective scaffolding and netting was installed around the church building in an effort to maintain the safety of parishioners and the community.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia says the future of the church is still being considered and all future masses will be celebrated at Holy Name of Jesus Church.
