La Salle Student Off To Exclusive Math Convention
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A La Salle junior will spend this weekend in Lincoln, Nebraska at a convention specifically for female math majors.
Roslyn, Montgomery County native Katherine Boligitz is one of only five Pennsylvania undergrads making the trip to this conference, and the roots of her interest in the subject go back years:
"I always liked math and we always did a lot of math and counting and stuff and so throughout the years, I've just enjoyed math and I never really thought anything of it, when I guess later on there were more boys in my math classes than girls."
Boligitz will be presenting a talk at the conference based on work she did over the summer with her professor in a specialized area:
"Working in graph theory. It's kind of an idea that's come from if you're coloring a map, what's the minimum number of colors you need so no two adjacent states are the same color?"
Although its much more advanced than that simple example she gave.
Boligitz is also studying economics and doesn't know if she'll do one, the other or add them up in grad school.
