KYW Flashback: Tanker Truck Explosions Shut Down The Schuylkill Expressway
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Shoppers were out in Center City on that April Saturday in 1975 when a geyser of black smoke focused their eyes on 30th Street.
A tanker truck had exploded on the expressway underpass. Eight years later, it happened again and KYW's Tony Hanson was there.
Hanson: (Explosion) There's another explosion. People are moving back. Smoke is pouring up from the Schuylkill Expressway.
Fire trucks couldn't reach the scene. The blaze was fought by fireboats on the River.
The worst tanker accident in Schuylkill Expressway history shut the busy highway for months.
