KYW Flashback: Soccer Scores Big In Chester
CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) - Soccer burst onto the Delaware Valley sports scene in a big way, just ten years ago.
The struggling city of Chester needed a major boost. So did the decaying Delaware River waterfront. When Major League Soccer began looking seriously at the Philadelphia area for a new franchise, a spark was lit.
Governor Ed Rendell, better known for his interest in American football than the world wide brand, saw an opportunity. So did Delaware County.
They came up with the money and PPL Energy was willing to take on a sponsorship.
KYW Newsradio was there for opening day when the PPL stadium cracked its gates to the first of many Philadelphia Union fans.
