KYW Flashback: Philadelphia Experienced Papal Visit Before

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - As Philadelphia prepares for the heralded visit of Pope Francis this fall, KYW recalls similar preparations 36 years ago.

Pope John Paul II, a close friend of Philadelphia's Archbishop John Cardinal Krol, was about to arrive. CBS3's Pat Ciarrocci recalled the two men riding through the streets of Philadelphia in an open car to the cheers of thousands who crowded the route:

"Long live the pope," they chanted over and over again.

A high altar was constructed on Logan Circle where more than a million people gathered on the Parkway to be near the Pontiff. Mayor Frank Rizzo had overseen unprecedented security for the visit.

The event was flawless.
