KYW Flashback: Goodbye Ferry, Hello Commodore Barry
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Delaware Valley is populated by an army of daily commuters. And while ferry boats may provide some seagoing fantasies to break up a daily routine, the one between Chester and Bridgeport in New Jersey was suddenly becoming obsolete.
This week in 1969, KYW was reporting the start of construction on the Commodore Barry Bridge.
When the bridge opened 41 years ago, the once glamorous ferries were retired. The bridge was the connector that linked south Jersey with the Delaware County riverfront. Many of us use it as a leisurely route to the shore.
But the question often asked is, who was Commodore Barry?
John Barry, buried in Philadelphia, was a Revolutionary War naval hero and privateer - a legally sanctioned pirate.
