Kim Davis' Lawyer Expounds On Meetings With Pope Francis

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Matt Staver, the lawyer for Rowan County, Kentucky Clerk, Kim Davis, revealed some of the details of her secret meeting with Pope Francis when he visited the United States.

Staver told Dom Giordano that the Pope went out of his way to support and strengthen Kim Davis.

"What's really important is any meeting that occurs in a private setting like this with the Pope, and whoever he's meeting with, Kim Davis or anyone else, has the blessing of the Pope. He, obviously, doesn't meet with anyone he doesn't want to. In this case, he had lots and lots and lots of requests for meetings, whether group or private, that he just wasn't able to accommodate. But one person he did accommodate, and that he wanted to meet with, and that he took time out of his busy schedule to encourage is Kim Davis. I think that speaks volumes for the Pope."

He contends the Pope sees Davis as a champion for religious liberty.

"He is a strong believer in the inherent human right of religious freedom. He also believes in marriage as the union of a man and a woman. At the same time that he's reaching out to everyone across the different perspectives, his visit was not politically based. He's reaching across lines to bring unity. He ultimately saw Kim Davis as an individual who was someone that had gained world wide attention, obviously, because of this issue of religious freedom."

Staver also said he see's the Pope's teachings in Davis' life story.

"Whether you're a Christian or not, we all should believe in some kind of forgiveness and redemption. Certainly, the Pope's message has been consistent about that. There is hope for everyone. There's redemption. Kim Davis' life is a story of redemption."
