Jury Returns Mixed Verdict Against Philadelphia Tire Slasher
PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — A jury has returned a mixed verdict against a victim-turned-suspect in a series of tire slashings that plagued a Philadelphia neighborhood.
Former Mayfair resident David Toledo will remain free on bail after he was acquitted Wednesday of 45 of 60 counts.
Defense lawyer William Brennan says Toledo was convicted of 15 misdemeanor and summary offenses. He will seek probation at the March 24 sentencing.
Brennan says the verdict shows that someone else committed many of the crimes.
Authorities say the 46-year-old Toledo, a butcher, also slashed his own tires to seek media attention. He was convicted of damaging his own vehicle, as well as a weapons charge and criminal mischief.
During the trial, Brennan suggested that a prosecution witness who carried a knife on neighborhood patrols was also a suspect.
Toledo faces a maximum of 24 years in prison and will be sentenced on March 24, 2014.
