Jay Lloyd's Getaway: Finding Your Place In The Sun

By Jay Lloyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Suffering from frost fatigue? Want to relocate to a place in the sun? You can do it.

This month, all over social media, freezer dwellers of these northeastern United States have been threatening to permanently pull up stakes for warmer climes.

And who can blame them?  It can be the "getaway" -- long or short -- of a lifetime.

I know.  As a young man (below) I earned my way through Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

My friend Margie Smith-Holt (below) walked into a tiki bar in the Virgin Islands and saw a sign that said, "Server/Bartender Wanted."  She said, "I can do that."

Another friend made her way through Greece with nothing more than a smile and a guitar.

My daughter Kathryn (top photo), at age 22, headed for sunny Spain and earned a living teaching English.

All it takes is the willingness to go. The easiest sunny spots to connect for a job are the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico: any American citizen has full rights -– you don't even need a passport.

Spain and other Mediterranean countries are tougher, but there is work if you can navigate the system. A good place to start is a four-week, teaching-English-as-a-second-language course in Barcelona.

Then, kiss frigid Jack Frost adios!
