Interning Was Key When Pursuing Career For Philadelphia CEO

Ari Goldberger is the founder and CEO of a doctor search website called MD.com. The search engine allows consumers to find a doctor that best suits their ailment. The site allows patients to consult with a physician through secure online video technology. Users can search for doctors, specialists, location, name, gender or insurance. Ari earned his BS degree from U Penn.  He received his law degree from Rutgers Law in Camden, NJ. His specialty is in domain name law and buying and selling sought after domains.

What kind of degree is needed to secure a job in your field?

"I'd recommend a bachelor in business or economics, preferably followed by an M.B.A.. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics but went on to get my law degree. Today's bachelor degree is like yesterday's high school diploma."

What are the most challenging aspects of your job?

"Communicating a vision and helping each member of the organization see it and live it every day. Also, finding the talented people who I can set on a job and trust that it's going to get done, and get done right. I'm fortunate that I've assembled a team at MD.com, who are plug-and-play."

After graduation, how hard was it to transition into the working world?

"When I first graduated in the 80's, it wasn't nearly as difficult as it is today to get into the working world. But, even so, there's always going to be competition for every position, regardless of the generation. Having a good head on your shoulders, being world smart and not just book smart, and exuding passion are key ingredients to landing a job."

What advice would you give someone who is pursuing a career as a business manager?

"Intern, intern, intern! Preferably in diverse business environments. Use that time to learn something about a variety of roles, not just your particular assignment. Find a mentor who's willing to answer your questions and introduce you around."
