Innocent Woman Killed After Police Chase Ends In Crash In West Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a deadly end to a police pursuit in West Philadelphia Wednesday night.
An innocent woman, identified as 55-year-old Carol Isom from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, was killed when a car the cops were chasing slammed into her vehicle.
Police are now investigating to see if the officers involved followed protocol.
Police Commissioner Richard Ross offered his condolences to the victim's family and says they're looking at how officers handled the pursuit, their speed, and all angles of the chase.
"Obviously pursuits can be dangerous for the public and police officers, but unfortunately it's a part of what we do."
It started with gunshots at 48th and Westminster around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Police say they chased a black Maxima with two men in it that fled the scene.
This police pursuit went about a mile-and-a-half, and police say the Maxima slammed into a car with a woman in it.
Isom died in the hospital.
There were two other cars involved, but no other innocent people were hurt.
Police say they arrested the two men they were chasing and a gun was recovered.
Police also say a gunshot victim, who may be connected to the shooting that caused the chase, was located at a hospital.
The suspects, who are brothers, are facing charges of homicide by vehicle, fleeing and eluding law enforcement, and aggravated assault.
