Lane closures to start overnight on I-95 in South Philadelphia to repair bridge

PennDOT working to repair bridge on I-95 in South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Expect a slow go the next couple of days on Interstate 95 in South Philadelphia.

Lane closures will be in place for I-95 southbound overnight in South Philadelphia through Friday to repair a bridge deck, PennDOT announced Wednesday.

It's all because a metal cover plate came off sending debris falling from the overpass. Lanes will be closed on the southbound side one mile north of the Walt Whitman/I-76 interchange at Tasker Street starting Wednesday night through Friday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

"Like a truck drove by and you would hear, 'Bang, bang, bang, and then you started seeing concrete fall from up there," Carol Omally said.

Omally says the sound of crumbling debris under I-95 southbound near Tasker Avenue kept her and her family up all night. She says she constantly heard the large pieces crash and fall to the ground.

The right two lanes of I-95 southbound were closed early Wednesday morning after a cover plate came off, according to PennDOT officials. The cover plate sent debris from the overpass.

Crews put a temporary repair in place by using a cold patch to reopen traffic before 3 p.m., PennDOT said.

All southbound lanes of I-95 at Tasker Street will reopen each morning from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., according to PennDOT.

PennDOT is asking all drivers to plan ahead for traffic on I-95 southbound and they say the work is weather dependent.
