House Set To Vote On Governor Wolf's Proposed Income Tax Hike

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf is proposing to increase the personal income tax as part of a modified tax proposal he's hoping will get a vote in the state House on Wednesday.

Governor Wolf is proposing to increase the state personal income tax rate by half a percentage point, from 3.07 to 3.57 percent. That's lower than the income tax increase he proposed in March, and while he has dropped his proposal to increase the sales tax, he still wants a tax on natural gas drillers.

Steve Miskin, spokesman for the House Republican leader, still sees little chance for passage of the governor's proposal.

"I don't think it has nearly the support he might think it has among the Democrats or Republicans," Miskin says.

Even if Wolf gets the vote of every Democrat in the House, he would still need the support of a significant number of Republicans. The governor's proposal would anticipate elimination of property taxes for more seniors and households with disabled residents.
