Officials: Toddler, 3 Adults Injured In Northeast Philadelphia House Fire
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A toddler was among four people rushed to the hospital after flames broke out in a Northeast Philadelphia home, officials say. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke when they arrived to the home on the 4600 block of Kendrick Street in Holmesburg around 5:58 a.m. Monday.
A 2-year-old and his 30-year-old mother were among four people rescued from the home. Two men were also rescued from the second floor with burns.
"We seen that the baby was unresponsive, but I didn't know. It's a shame. It's a tragedy and they're good people. She's always out here playing with him," said neighbor Dana Rementer.
Firefighters found the woman and toddler on the first floor. Two men -- one with burns --were rescued from the second floor.
All four victims were rushed to Torresdale Hospital.
Two cats and a dog were killed in the fire.
Crews encountered heavy smoke at the three-story home. Fire officials say there were no working smoke detectors inside.
They also say the flames started in the basement.
Frigid temperatures complicated their jobs.
"The water is freezing around us. It takes everybody a little bit longer. Everyone is wearing heavier clothes. It takes a lot longer to do simple tasks in cold weather," Philadelphia Fire Department Deputy Chief Vincent Mulray said.
If you need a smoke alarm, call 311 and the city will provide one for free.
