High Tech Training Prepares Students For Jobs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - By 2018, 42% of jobs in manufacturing will require some post-secondary education or a degree, according to findings from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. And, engineers are among the top 10 jobs US employers will have a hard time filling.
One example, cited in an article in Education Week, is Oregon, where 23 school districts are sharing $9 million for hands-on teaching projects and schools are partnering with nearby businesses.
Teacher John Niebergall, who back in 2002, was having his students draw 3-D models on computers, now has them working with automated computer commands instead of by hand. And, with a grant, he's buying a small motor home and mobile trailer, going on the road teaching instructors to bring similar projects to their schools.
He believes that while all the students won't become engineers, they can be engineer technicians. Statistics indicate there will be plenty of work.
