Hear Philly: The Shore Thing - Christmas In July, Stanley Cup On Display and Beach Patrol School Mascot Races

By Andrew Kramer

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (CBS) - It may only be July, but a special visitor from the North Pole pays a visit to Sea Isle City this month.

"Sea Isle's always done Christmas in July," explains Christopher Glancey, President of the Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce.

Glancey says Santa Claus will be in town the evening of July 15th.

"He comes to Excursion Park and we have popcorn for the kids, candy canes and little handouts and surprises from Santa for all the children. It's just a great event for children to get a little word in early with the big guy about what they would like to get for Christmas this year so he could start the elves working on it, and it turns into a great event."

Afterward, "Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July" will be shown at Excursion Park for all to enjoy. For more go to visitsicnj.com.

As Santa leaves town, hockey's most prestigious trophy will be arriving a few days later, thanks to a former Flyers Coach...now an assistant with the champion Los Angeles Kings.

"John and Stacey Stevens will be bringing the Stanley Cup to Sea Isle City," says Sea Isle Mayor Len Desiderio.

Desiderio knows South Jersey is Flyers country, but says even though another team won the cup, you don't want to miss a chance like this:

"It's an opportunity to see the Stanley Cup up close and in person and it's an opportunity, especially for the young ones, to see the championship cup in Sea Isle City."

The Stanley Cup will be on display July 17th from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m. don't forget your cameras.

And that weekend, a popular event races back onto the island.

"The Beach Patrol Mascot School and Races are a long standing tradition here in sea Isle City," says Katherine Custer, director of community services for the city of sea isle.

Custer explains the "mascots" that will be competing aren't the ones you may be thinking of:

"For starters, a 'mascot' in beach patrol terms is a young child that the Beach Patrol lifeguards will take under their wings. Mascot School is a two day event and it is geared toward good sportsmanship, learning about beach safety and generally a great time for children on the beach. While their parents are standing on the sidelines of the sand, the children are running in races and doing all sorts of different things by age groups."

The races take off July 19th. For more go to the Sea Isle City Beach Patrol website.

And that's The Shore Thing for this month.
