Hamels Set For 2014 Debut As Phils Look For Fourth Straight W

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies are back at .500 with a record of 10-10 and on Wednesday night they will continue their series in Los Angeles, looking for a fourth straight win.

This game will also mark the 2014 debut of left-hander Cole Hamels. The veteran came to spring training behind schedule after battling tendinitis, but he looked very strong in his last rehab outing, throwing seven innings for Single-A Clearwater.

This would seem to be a good spot for Hamels to get started because he just about always throws well against Los Angeles. In seven career regular-season starts against the Dodgers, Hamels is 3-1 with a 1.76 ERA.

His mound opponent will be veteran right-hander Zack Greinke. He is off to a good start here ion 2014, 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA, although he has yet to throw more than 6 innings in any start. In 5 career appearances (4 starts) against the Phillies, Greinke is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA.

The Phillies are halfway through a ten-game road trip and so far they have gone 3-2. After Wednesday night they play one more game in LA, then wrap up the trip with three games in Arizona.

KYW's Matt Leon spoke with Corey Seidman of Phillies Nation and Phillies 24/7 HD Radio about this match-up.
