Gov. Christie Signs Bill To Require Police Car Cameras
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gov. Chris Christie has signed a measure that requires police departments to mount video cameras on their new cars or provide their officers with wearable cameras.
The measure Christie signed Wednesday was advocated by Assemblyman Paul Moriarty. The Democrat was charged in 2012 with drunken driving but was cleared with the help of evidence from a camera on the squad car of the Washington Township officer who pulled him over.
Moriarty says the measure is also intended to help protect officers in disputes with citizens.
There had been mystery over how Christie would handle the bill. He let an earlier version expire this year without explanation.
