Google Searches Spike During Political Drama At RNC

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Republican National Convention has piqued intense interest online, regardless of political stripe.

Google's Simon Rogers said the searching spike is a little abnormal.

"Normally, political events don't make the top trending searches on Google -- we've got Pokemon Go going on at the moment."

But after a raucous reception for Ted Cruz, his name shot into the top 20. In Pennsylvania alone, searches jumped about 2800 percent.

Rogers said the Texas senator overtook Melania Trump as the most searched-for convention speaker. Just after her address, people were looking for more details about her family and how she met Donald.

"However, as soon as the story broke about the origins of the speech, suddenly that's what people were searching for. And she remains the top-searched member of the Trump family, besides Donald Trump, of course."

And it's not just 'people': Googlers went gonzo for 'air kiss' after that Trump smooch attempt on his running mate.
