Flyers Acquire Sam Gagner, Move Grossman And Pronger Contract
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In addition to adding rookies during the NHL Draft, the Flyers also pulled off a trade with the Arizona Coyotes to acquire 25-year old center Sam Gagner. The Flyers sent the Coyotes defenseman Nicklas Grossman and the contract of Chris Pronger.
The trade was a cap motivated move for the Flyers who will save around $5 million as a result of the move.
Even more money could be saved, as the team is considering buying out the contract of Gagner who can be bought out up until June 30.
The dilemma for Ron Hextall and the Flyers is whether or not it is worth keeping Gagner on the roster instead of further improving the health of the cap.
Gagner is a natural center, something the Flyers do not necessarily need. However, last season he split time between center and both wing positions. His versatility and willingness to move around the ice could be keys to convincing the Flyers to keep him in town.
