Flower Show Preview: Delaware Valley College

By Molly Daly

NEW HOPE, Pa. (CBS) -- Delaware Valley College is incorporating the artwork of New Hope-Solebury School District students, grades K to 12, into an exhibit aimed at finding a cure for "Nature Deficit Disorder" -- an apparent epidemic in our tech-connected world!

Michael Fleischacker, chair of Del Val's landscape architecture and environmental science department, says the exhibit, called "Breakout," starts in a electronics-filled home.

"The idea is that once you break out of our enclosed, device-filled environment, you go into more of a structured garden.  And as you go further and further away from the home, it becomes more wild.  Ultimately, you end up walking through a tunnel that's green: it's got a living roof, it's got living walls, and this artwork that the students are developing is gonna be displayed throughout," he tells KYW Newsradio.

Fleischacker notes that Delaware Valley College has been exhibiting at the Philadelphia Flower Show since 1950.

"(It's) our 65th anniversary this year, so we're trying to do it big," he says, "branching out to 1,400 students and the greater community."
