Flames Gut Historic Castle In Delaware County

CHADDS FORD, Pa. (CBS) -- Flames gutted a historic castle overnight in Chadds Ford Township, Delaware County.

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Tuesday at the Rocky Hill Castle, a nearly 200-year-old home in the 100 block of Bullock Road.

Firefighters had difficulty battling the blaze because the home is located on a hill in a wooded area. Crews had trouble getting water to the fire. There were tanker trucks down on the ground sending water into a basin, and then that water was sent up the hill to the fire via hoses.

The fire was brought under control in about two hours.

The home dates back to the 19th century, built in 1821. It was later converted to all stone after originally being constructed as a summer home.

The current owners bought the home in 1957 -- and it had been up for sale.

There were no reports of injuries, but it appeared the home was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
