Five Revolutionary War-Era Cannons Moved To Their New Home In Old City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Early Tuesday morning, five Revolutionary War Era cannons were moved into their new home in Old City Philadelphia.

Parts of Chestnut Street were closed down for a few hours so the five massive, iron cannons could be brought to the outdoor plaza at the site of what will be the new Museum of the American Revolution at 3rd Street.

The Museum's Director of Operations, John McDevitt, tells CBS 3 Eyewitness News that all five cannons were actually used in the Revolutionary War, and that they're hoping the cannons will become another city landmark for tourists and locals alike.

"It will definitely entice people to come in, and see, learn more about the Revolutionary War and what got this great country started."

The Plaza will open to the public on Thursday, but the Museum itself won't open until April of next year.

The cannons are on a long-term loan from the Girard Estate.
