Fake Fisher-Price 'Happy Hour Playset' Meme Takes Over Internet
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A fake meme strikes again.
Toy company Fisher-Price had to reassure the public that a "Happy Hour Playset" ad that went viral was not real.
The fake ad showed three children at a bar with beer bottle-shaped containers. The ad said the package contained a pretend bar, bar stools and beer bottles.
Fisher-Price had to tamp down criticism that they would market such a toy.
"In the last few weeks some comical, yet fictional, Fisher-Price products have been introduced – perhaps the result of adult writers, designers and comedians that were Fisher-Price kids themselves," Amber Pietrobono, the company's public relations manager, told CBS News. "As a premiere childhood development company focused on helping families get the best possible start in life, we take our role in developing toys and products very seriously, but can appreciate the recent product development suggestions as obvious love of the brand."
The meme was created by Adam Padilla on his Instagram account. He told CBS affiliate KUTV he decided to create the meme after seeing his 21-month-old daughter playing with her toys.
"It occurred to me that it would be hilarious for a major toy company to market a toy 'bar' for toddlers," Padilla told KUTV.
He posted the meme to his Instagram account on Dec. 5, and it went viral within 24 hours.
"It's hysterical," Padilla said. "It's really amazing how many people have seen it. I'm very proud to have made so many people smile."
