Fires, Fallen Trees, Power Outages Caused By Violent Thunderstorms Overnight
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A fast-moving band of thunderstorms moved through the Delaware Valley overnight. Heavy rains, high winds and fierce lightning strikes caused big problems for thousands of residents.
Sections of Bucks County were among the hardest hit areas.
No one was injured when a bolt of lightning struck a home along Wisteria Lane in Doylestown at about 3am. Fire officials say the lightning strike blew apart a chimney on top of the home. The fire did not spread to other areas of the home.
Lightning is also being blamed for a fire that damaged a home along Summer Ridge Circle in Chalfont.
A number of trees were knocked over in the region. In Quakertown, uprooted trees toppled onto power lines, causing power outages.
PECO was reporting a total of about 7,500 outages in the region. A spokesperson for the utility company says most customers should be back on before the afternoon.
