Firefighter Injured At South Philadelphia Fire

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Firefighters had to face the heat and humidity as they battled an apartment fire on South Broad Street overnight.

One firefighter had to be taken to the hospital.

The injured firefighter was taken to Jefferson hospital for treatment. Officials say he suffered from smoke inhalation and elevated body temperature. He is in stable condition.

He was one of 75 firefighters at the blaze at a three story apartment building at Broad and Wharton.

Firefighters got the call around one Wednesday morning and officials say it took about two hours to get the fire under control.

It happened during another hot and humid night, and Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel says crews have been on top of their game.

"Everybody's been working hard. We've had a very busy couple weeks in the heat. A real challenge for us. This was a very, very challenging fire and once again, Philadelphia firefighters did an outstanding job."

Stormy weather also rolled through during the fire fight.

No other injuries were reported.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
