Firefighter Injured Battling Blaze At Vacant Apartment Building In Frankford
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling a blaze overnight at a vacant apartment building in Northeast Philadelphia.
Flames broke out around 1 a.m. Monday on the second floor of the three-story building in the 1200 block of Arrott Street in the city's Frankford section.
Part of the roof collapsed and eight people were evacuated from a nearby home as a precaution.
One firefighter was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and treated for a minor injury. No one else was hurt in the fire, which was placed under control in a couple of hours.
The cause of the blaze wasn't immediately known, but officials called it suspicious because the property was vacant and there was a fire at the same location one week earlier.
"It appears that it is somewhat suspicious given that no one lives there and there are no utilities in place," said Deputy Fire Chief Henry Costo. "And we did have a fire there approximately a week ago that we were able to extinguish obviously before it got to this stage."
That fire is still be investigated by the Fire Marshall's office.
Authorities said it is possible squatters have been in and out of the building.
