Fire Severely Damages 2 Properties In Avalon

AVALON, N.J. (CBS) -- A home under construction and a fully-built home sustained serious damage during a fire in a popular Jersey Shore town.

The fire started at about 11 p.m. Thursday inside an unoccupied home in the 4700 block of 5th Avenue in Avalon.

Firefighters with the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene and discovered a new home under construction that fully involved in flames.

The fire quickly spread to a fully-built home on the north side of the building.

Chopper 3 HD was over the scene where it showed the home that was under construction completely destroyed. The fully-built home sustained serious damage. Both properties were unoccupied.

The fire reached multi-alarms and several fire departments from surrounding communities assisted in battling the fire.

The fire was placed under control at about 3 a.m.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the fire at the building of origin was completely extinguished. Firefighters were still on the scene putting out hotspots that continued to burn in the adjacent property.

Two Avalon firefighters were treated at the scene by the Avalon Rescue Squad for exposure to the cold.

Traffic detours remain in place Friday morning at the scene of the fire at Fifth Avenue.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
