Female Fights Off Would-Be Burglars With A Baseball Bat

By Pat Ciarrocchi

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 54-year-old woman fought off two men attempting to break into her home in Northeast Philadelphia with a baseball bat Thursday morning.

Diane Davies says she clubbed at least one of the men, who were posing as gas workers, while they were attempting to break into her Frankford home.

"Before I knew it, I was being sucker-punched," Davies recalled to Eyewitness News.

"She just opened the door...and they punched her right in the face," says Davies' daughter.

"My son's bat is right there," Diane said, indicating a spot near the front door of her home. "And I said, 'Oh no, buddy.'"

Diane then grabbed the bat and swung hard. She says she hit the suspect in the shoulder and neck area, and the pair ran off.

Diane's daughter says her mom, the daughter of a homicide detective, has instincts. She's also warning others in the area not to open the door to strangers.

Diane was treated at Frankford Hospital for a concussion, but the fake utility workers remain on the loose.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.
