Family Of Camden Man Killed During Police-Involved Shooting Hire Attorney

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  "We just want answers... there are too many unanswered questions," said Veronica Cabrera, whose son died earlier this week during a shooting that involved two Camden County Metro police officers.

Cabrera and her family have hired an attorney to conduct an independent investigation of the incident, that took place Tuesday evening in Camden.

According to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, 24-year-old Freddy Baez was killed after the officers responded to a 911 call for domestic dispute in the 3200 block of Rutledge Walk.

Authorities say the caller told the dispatcher that a male involved was possibly armed.

When the two responding police officers arrived on the scene, they exchanged gunfire with Baez.

Baez, of Camden, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Cooper University Hospital.

Through a statement released by attorney Conrad Benedetto, Baez's family says they believe a "thorough investigation is needed to prevent the potential of further eroding the public's confidence and trust in police activity."

Benedetto said the family is also considering an independent autopsy.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office released a statement about the shooting on Tuesday, saying the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is ongoing.

Their names have not been released.

State law requires the Prosecutor's Office conduct an investigation whenever a municipal police officer is involved in a shooting.

CBS 3 has reached out to the Prosecutor's Office for comment about the pending independent investigation.
