Falling Ice Closes Portion Of Market Street In Center City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Ice falling from a building on Market Street Wednesday afternoon led to an hours-long closure -- and officials are warning people throughout Center City to continue to "look out below."

No injuries were reported when a frozen chunk fell from a facade or ledge along Market between 12th and 13th Streets. But police shut down the busy stretch to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, causing backups on the cross streets and forcing people on foot to take detours. The road was reopened hours later but the sidewalk remained closed Wednesday night.

City officials say crews from the Department of Licenses and Inspections are patrolling mid-and high-rise areas and will order more closures if necessary.

They caution people to heed those temporary barricades because even small pieces of falling ice can cause injury. Building owners are told to take precautions like placing warning signs around areas where ice could fall.
