Facebook To Show More Content From Friends, Less From Publishers And Brands

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Sweeping changes are coming to your newsfeed as Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg is making good on his promise of more "meaningful social interactions" to the network.

Facebook will begin emphasizing more "meaningful" content in the newfeed. Users will now see more posts from family and friends and less posts from businesses and brands.

In a very long Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg says the social network was created "to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us."

The changes come as Facebook along with Twitter and Google face continued criticism over Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election, extremist content, and online harassment.

Zuckerberg says Facebook feels a responsibility to make sure its service isn't just fun to use but also good for people's well being.

Zuckerberg added that Facebook's product team will shift from focusing on helping users find relevant content to helping them find more meaningful social interactions.

"Meaningful or not," the move will not affect paid advertisements, but will likely hurt publishers, nonprofits, small businesses, and groups who rely on Facebook to reach people.
