Effort Underway To Buy And Preserve Gen. Lee's Headquarters In Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) — An effort is underway to purchase, preserve and restore to its Civil War condition the site of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's headquarters during the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Civil War Trust said Tuesday it's already raised much of the money needed to buy and improve the four-acre location west of town.

A private museum is currently on the property. The trust plans to demolish all modern structures.

The trust needs about $1.1 million by the end of the year to close the deal. It plans to turn over the property to the National Park Service to be incorporated into the adjacent national battlefield park.

Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett joined members of the trust in Gettysburg to promote the effort on Tuesday. She formerly worked for the Gettysburg Foundation.
