Despite The High Temperatures, Today Is The Start Of (Meteorological) Winter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The countdown to Christmas has begun!

As we welcome in December, we also welcome the first day of winter - meteorological winter, that is.

Mother Nature doesn't seem to care too much, as high temperatures are expected to hit 60 degrees. Although the week will start close to 10 degrees above normal, the mercury will be fluctuating quite a bit this week.

After some early sunshine on Monday, clouds will thicken. A cold front moving through may trigger some showers this afternoon. Temperatures will take a tumble in the wake of this front, and Tuesday's highs will fall 15-20 degrees from than today's.

Tuesday Amounts:

Wet weather moves back into the picture as well. Rain will primarily fall along the coast, with any snow changing over to a mix and eventually to all rain in and around Philadelphia. Areas further north will see the longest lasting snowfall, but even that too will change over to a mix and freezing rain later in the day.

To recap November, Philadelphia was 2.4 degrees below average temperature-wise and 1.08" above in terms of rainfall. As typically happens, November featured a wide variety of temperatures, ranging from a low of 20 on the 19th to a high of 72 on the 24th. Temperatures rose to 60 or above eight times, and fell below to freezing or below nine.
