Depression In Pregnant Women: Symptoms and Solutions

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The problem of postpartum depression is well documented. Now doctors are looking at depression that is diagnosed before the baby's birth.

Pregnant women who are sad, skip doctor's appointments, lose interest in friends and social media and let their grooming habits slip may be depressed, suffering from antepartum depression, according to Dr. David Jaspan, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology  at Einstein Healthcare Network.

"Patients who are pregnant have a preconceived understanding that they should be thrilled that the pregnancy is wonderful and they should always be thrilled and happy with being pregnant," Dr. Jaspan said, "but the fact of the matter is being pregnant is difficult. It puts stress on the body, it puts stress emotionally and it puts stress financially."

Dr. Jaspan says any patient who has concerns about her feelings during pregnancy should speak to her doctor and not simply blame hormones.

He says counseling, meditation and changes in diet and exercise can help.
