Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held For New Extension Of Delaware Avenue In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A new extension of Delaware Avenue is making it easier to navigate Philadelphia's river wards.
The six-tenths of a mile stretch of road and adjoining trail extends Delaware Avenue from Lewis to Orthodox Streets in Bridesburg. The new greenway in the shadow of the Betsy Ross Bridge joins key neighborhoods, says former Congressman Bob Borski, chair of the Delaware River City Corporation.
"It connects Bridesburg with Port Richmond and Fishtown in Center City, in a manner in which you don't need to travel on I-95," said Borski.
And that will take industrial traffic off of narrow Richmond Street, says DRCC executive director Tom Branigan.
"That's going to be the beginning of providing relief from the Bridesburg community for all the truck traffic," said Branigan.
The new road has been open since November 20. City officials gathered Tuesday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The next phase beginning in 2017 will extend Delaware Avenue north to Buckius Street.
