Teenage boy wanted in connection with fatal shooting outside Roxborough High School

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Police Department is searching for a 16-year-old boy wanted in connection with the shooting outside of Roxborough High School. Investigators have also identified seven other persons of interest.

Police say Dayron Burney-Thorne is wanted on active arrest warrants for murder, multiple counts of attempted murder and other related offenses

Sources say Burney-Thorne is from North Philadelphia. Sources also say DNA analysis of that SUV tied to the shooting shows Burney-Thorne was likely the getaway driver.

He is to be considered armed and dangerous and has an active arrest warrant for murder.

"I want to make something perfectly clear, very clear to the people responsible for committing this crime," Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said. " Do the right thing and turn yourselves in."

Police on Tuesday afternoon warned those responsible for shooting five teenagers to surrender.

"We're giving them the opportunity to turn themselves in right now today and if that doesn't happen," Outlaw said, "we're coming for them."

Police say in addition to Burney-Thorne, investigators have identified seven other persons of interest.

"Turn yourselves in. We know who you are," Outlaw said. "And you are just delaying the inevitable. All that you're doing by hiding is continuing to revictimize the families of those that you've harmed and your very own as well."

Police provide update on Roxborough HS shooting investigation

There was an increased law enforcement presence outside the Hunting Park funeral home where family and friends are paid their respects and said goodbye to 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde during a visitation on Tuesday. The 14-year-old's funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Nicolas was pronounced dead at 5:09 p.m. exactly one week ago after the bullets from possibly five shooters hit him in the chest 30 minutes earlier as he and four other teens left the football field at Roxborough High.

"We give our word to the survivors and our families that we will not rest until the cowards responsible for this are taken in to custody," Outlaw said.

Sources say investigators identified Burney-Thorne with having some degree of involvement as far as back as Friday night when they went looking for him at his North Philadelphia home.

He was not there.

New information from police revealed a second car was used to facilitate movements to and from the gray SUV picked up on surveillance video just a block from the shooting.

Investigators said the incident was well planned.

"This was definitely a well-orchestrated shooting," Capt. Jason Smith said. "It really was. These individuals were being very careful not to leave their identifiers."

Outlaw with a message to parents and the wider community about the moment the city finds itself in.

"I find it beyond unnerving to find that our children continue to be caught up in serious crimes," Outlaw said. "Whether they're perpetuating the crimes or they themselves are becoming victims."

"What these kids don't realize, unfortunately, is that some of the solutions that they are coming up with are final," Outlaw said. "This is the end for them. There is no going back."

There is a $45,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction for this homicide.
