2-Alarm Fire Rips Through Montco Country Club

GLENSIDE, Pa. (CBS) – Crews battled a two-alarm fire at Lulu Country Club in Glenside, Montgomery County Sunday morning.

Officials say the call came in around 6:30 a.m. for the blaze at the clubhouse on the 1600 block of Limekiln Pike.

Firefighters from eight surrounding companies were called to the scene.

"It's an old building with a heavy timber roof and the large open floor plan helps contribute to the fire spread," says Fort Washington Fire Chief Eric Clauson.

The blaze began in the basement, then started showing through the roof before being placed under control later in the morning.

Golfers with early tee times were lined up on the lawn in front of the smoking hulk of the building, while crews used fire cannons to control the flames.

Rick Hohn was in the middle of a two-day tournament, and was shocked when he showed up early Sunday:

"I've been here since 1994. I've been on the Board of Governors for I don't know how many years, and this is a terrible day."

He says, fortunately, no one was hurt and the greens are still in good shape, so there will be golf, and most likely the main structure will be rebuilt.

Limekiln Pike was shut down throughout the morning between North Hills and Jenkintown Road.

An investigation is underway by the Fire Marshall to determine what sparked the fire.
