Cost Of Pope's Visit Grows As PPA Calculates Its Losses
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The costs from the Papal visit keep adding up.
Last week, the city revealed its expenses were $17-million, only $9-million of which will be reimbursed. The Parking Authority recently figured out its lost revenue.
Deputy director Rick Dixon says revenue for September was about $1.2-million under a normal September:
"Related to the Papal visit and substantial parts of meters being out of service and driving restrictions in place."
Dixon says the PPA also incurred more than =$300,000 in overtime costs for towing from the no-car zone in preparation. That brings the total tab to over $1.5-million.
The good news, he says, is they were running about $700,000 above budget going into September:
"So we believe we're going to make up this budget shortfall, and we will be able to fulfill our budget obligations to both the city and school district."
