Collaboration Between Montco School District And PSU Will Result In Fields For Student Athletes And Community

ABINGTON, Pa. (CBS) -- A Montgomery County school district is teaming up with Penn State University to provide state of the art athletic facilities for not only student athletes from both educational institutions but also the community.
Memorial Field used to be the home for the Abington High School football team before the district built a stadium. Now, that old field will be transformed into playing fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, softball and other sports.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held this week for the $5 million project, which is coming at no cost to Abington taxpayers.
Superintendent Doctor Amy Sichel says, "It's taken six years to make sure that our soccer players, our field hockey players, our lacrosse players are going to now have the ability to play on a state of the art facility because of the financial commitment made by Penn State."
Penn State Abington Chancellor Doctor Karen Wiley Sandler calls it a win-win and says this unique collaboration between the University and the school district could serve as a national model. They hope to have it finished by spring.
