Cleanup Project Along Parts Of Delaware River Gets Underway

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A two-week project to clean up portions of the Delaware River got started Thursday with the first groups of volunteers heading out.
Working in collaboration with the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, nonprofit Living Lands and Waters is taking out groups of volunteers twice a day to places like Tinicum Island and Tinicum Marsh for an all out cleanup effort.
"We found a horseshoe, which is always good luck, you know? We're finding a lot of figurines," says Chad Pregracke, founder and president of Living Lands and Waters. "Hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles, that's the main thin, unfortunately. Tires, barrels, appliances, refrigerators, just a wide range of things."
Pregracke says the first trip of the two-week visit was pretty productive.
"We went out there and filled up probably 2,000 pounds in about five hours," Pregracke says. "It's kind of awesome, man. It's really good, it's empowering, you can really see the difference."
The volunteers will be heading out twice a day on eight different days through September 1, and Pregracke says more volunteers are always needed.
