City Crews Begin Preparations For Impending Winter Storm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The city of Philadelphia has started its preparations for the winter storm that's expected to dump anywhere from 12-16 inches of snow in Philly and the surrounding areas.

Officials say trucks from the Streets Department are already busy putting brine onto main arteries, bridges and roadways in higher elevations.

Authorities say brining the roads is most effective when it's done 48 hours before any snow falls.

Once the snow comes, trucks will begin salting city roadways.

Right now, crews are checking to make sure all of the equipment is ready for once the storm starts.

The city's Office of Emergency Management says it will work with the police, fire and streets departments, as well as SEPTA and PennDOT.

If need be, the city's emergency operations center will be activated.
