Chris Polk May Surprise Eagles Fans This Season

By Ray Boyd

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- He may not be as widely known as his backfield mates, LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles, but Chris Polk is someone that may be worth keeping an eye on in the Eagles' backfield. Andrew Kulp of Bleacher Report did a list of the players that surprise us most during Eagles Training Camp and Polk was the first name on the list.

It seems odd to view Polk, a back who only had 11 carries last season, as someone who will have a strong impact on the season. However, the uniqueness of the Eagles' offense, and in particular the backfield, could lead to Polk having a stellar season.

Regardless of how he plays in training camp and preseason, Polk will more than likely be listed as the third back on the depth chart. McCoy is coming off a career season and has established himself as a top three back in the NFL. Sproles is a weapon that could be tailor made for Chip Kelly's offense and will get his share of plays.

Despite Sproles' presense, Polk is more than likely going to be the guy who steps in on a regular basis when needed for LeSean McCoy. Sproles has been established as more of a versatile overall offensive weapon. The Eagles will spread him around the field and throw to him out of the backfield more than he will run it between the tackles.

Although the sample size was low, Polk showed an ability to make plays. In his 11 carries last season, Polk rushed for three touchdowns or four yards, 10 yards and 38 yards.

Bryce Brown was shipped to the Buffalo Bills this offseason and an opportunity was immediately presented for Polk. It may be a crowded backfield, but there should indeed be a role for all three of Kelly's unique running talents to have an impact on the offense.
