Chip Kelly: QB Position 'Diluted With Three Guys In Mix'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was asked about the possibility of adding former Eagles quarterback Nick Foles to his new team, the San Francisco 49ers.
"I'm a big fan of Nick, but right now our eggs are in Kap [Colin Kaepernick] and Blaine's [Blaine Gabbert] basket, and we're going to see what those guys can do," Kelly told CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco. "And [we're] very confident in those guys and it has really nothing to do with Nick, but it has to do a lot with both Blaine and Kap, in terms of where they are and giving them an ample shot at being the quarterback."
Despite his famous 27 touchdowns and two interceptions campaign with Kelly and the Eagles in 2013, Foles was traded to the Rams after the 2014 season for Sam Bradford. The now Los Angeles Rams traded up to draft QB Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft and last week, the Rams released Foles, who lost his starting role midway through last season.
As for Kelly's old team, they also traded up in the draft (twice) to select a QB in North Dakota's Carson Wentz with pick No. 2. The Eagles, with new head coach Doug Pederson and former general manager Howie Roseman back in charge, also re-signed Bradford and signed Chase Daniel creating a controversial and expensive three-headed quarterback situation.
Kelly, when asked about Foles, explained that he doesn't want three quarterbacks in the mix.
"I think if you have three guys in the mix," Kelly told Maiocco, "it gets really diluted and now you're not going to get enough reps for anybody to make a determination of who the quarterback is going to be."
