Camden Reading Program Aims At Changing Lives

CAMDEN, NJ. (CBS) -- A new program is kicking off in Camden County to increase the number of adults who can read.
The new literacy program will teach adults to read, with the goal of improving their lives. The reading program will be held at the Nilsa I. Cruz Library on the Rutgers University Camden campus. Library director Linda Devlin says it will take a whole family approach.
"Adults who are coming to our classes have children that they need to bring with them," she says. "And we will work with the adults as well as their children. So the adults will be learning to read and the children will be attending story times and programs. We will be providing them with books that they can take home and put in their home libraries."
Devlin says the library wants to be a catalyst for change in the community, and hopes to break the cycle of illiteracy in poorer neighborhoods.
