Bridge Commission Votes To Increase Two Delaware River Bridge Tolls

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Burlington County Bridge Commission voted Wednesday night to increase tolls on the Tacony-Palmyra and Burlington-Bristol Bridges.

Currently, the toll stands at $2.00 per car. EZ Pass users will see their toll rise to $3.00. Cash users will pay $4.00. This will be the first toll increase in 15 years for the two bridges.

"We wish we didn't have to do this," Chairman John Comegno said before the vote.

Comegno told the crowd all of the money from the toll hike will go toward bridge repairs. The Tacony-Palmyra opened in 1929. The Burlington-Bristol opened two years later.

"Toll increases which are going to go to fund six critical capital improvement and maintenance projects," said Comegno.

Comegno says those projects will take roughly five years to complete and cost more than $110 million.

"We're compelled for purposes of safety for the integrity of our spans to fund these projects," said Comegno.

The new rates will kick in September 15th.
