Blue Bell Man Raises Money And More For Local Rehab Hospital
By Lynne Adkins
BLUE BELL, Pa. (CBS) -- An attorney from Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, who has raised millions of dollars for a local hospital, is now realizing the value of his actions.
Jerry Segal was a patient at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in the 1988 after neck surgery. He was so impressed with the facility he started a fundraiser featuring his two passions, golf and the rehab center that helped him walk again. There were twenty golfers at the first Jerry Segal Classic.
"We raised $28-thousand, and my wife and I matched it," Segal said. "With the $56-thousand, we bought a bus to take the patients in and around events in the city of Philadelphia."
The annual golf classic has raised $13.5 million to date. Now, following a swimming accident, Segal is back at Magee and seeing first hand how that money is helping.
"It's wonderful to know that we are possessors of cutting edge equipment that gives the patient the best shot at getting well," Segal said, "and leaving Magee far better for having been here."
The 26th annual Jerry Segal Classic is Friday, September 18 at the ACE Club and Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill. He hopes to raise $700-thousand.
