Blog: 2015 Car Complaint Index
By Jim Donovan: There are few things that I enjoy less than car buying. Quite frankly I'd rather visit my dentist for a root canal. Between having to deal with pushy sales people and having to do tons of advance research before heading out to the car lot, I'd probably be better off just walking.
But one of the resources that I check when buying a car is the Car Complaint Index. Consumer advocate and author Jack Gillis has been putting together the Index for years now. The complaint index is based on a ratio of the number of customer complaints for each vehicle to the sales of that vehicle. The complaints used to determine the index are those that consumers file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The numbers represent relative index scores, not the number of complaints received. The complaint index score considers sales volume and years on the road. Lower index numbers are better.
If you're considering buying a 2015 model-year vehicle Gillis finds that the Acura RLX, Fiat 500L, Mercedes Benz CLA, Jeep Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder are more likely than other vehicles to give owners problems.
