Driver Charged With DUI After Striking 8 People At South Philly Block Party
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was chaos at a Labor Day block party, when a vehicle crashes into a crowd sending several people to the hospital, including a pregnant woman.
The crash took place at about 4 p.m. Monday along the 1500 block of Ringgold Street in the Point Breeze section of the city.
According to police, a female driver attempted to go around a crowd of people before crashing into the crowd. The driver told police that her brakes failed causing her to hit at least eight people.
Now police have said that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
"It was a lot of people here," said witness Akiema Boggs. "Everyone was either eating or talking with their families."
One of the victims is said to be a pregnant women about 6-8 months along.
All of the victims were transported to area hospitals, thankfully there was no reports of life-threatening injuries.
Partygoers like Kamilah Muhammad were in total shock.
"It was horrifying," she said. "Very horrifying. Everybody was screaming and hollering and crying."
Kamilah and others stuck around to hug and comfort each other.
No other information on the driver has been released at this time.
