Bacterial Meningitis Case In Camden County No Cause For Alarm

By David Madden

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- A North Jersey man is being treated for bacterial meningitis at a Camden County hospital.

The unidentified man was taken to Virtua Hospital over the weekend where the diagnosis was confirmed. He had been visiting family members at the time he came down ill.

"The individual is currently very stable, very healthy and still in Virtua Hospital," Camden County Freeholder Carmen Rodruguez told KYW Newsradio, "but he is definitely recovering and the possibility of spread, I would say, is near zero."

Relatives and others who have been in close contact with the man have been given medication as a precaution and the state health department is monitoring the situation.

The usual warning applies in this case. Bacterial meningitis is not easily spread, and certainly not in casual settings.
